Speeds

Bandwidths and Speeds, also in (.xls) Excel Format

Key terms:

Bit8 bits = 1 byte, comms is measured in bits rather than bytes to make things seem bigger !
Baud rate  number of distinct symbolic changes in a communication, not to be confused with 'bits per second'
bpsBits per second
B/sBytes per second (8 bits = 1 byte)
KBpskilobits (1000 bits) per second
MBpsmegabits (1 million bits) per second
GBpsgigabits (1000 million bits) per second
TBpsterabits (even more million bits) per second
KB/sKilobytes per second (effective transfer speed)
MB/sMegabytes per second (effective transfer speed)

The Table:

Transfer rate: MB/sSpeed: KBpsMBpsGBpsExample Uses
Audio-Visual :
Audio AM0.03 32 0.030.000MW (AM) broadcast quality
Audio FM0.10 96 0.100.000FM broadcast quality
Audio CD0.19 192 0.190.000CD quality (e.g. personal stereos)
Audio CD Hi-Fi0.32 320 0.320.000CD quality (e.g. Hi-Fidelity)
Video (1)0.02 16 0.020.000Videophone quality
Video (2)0.38 384 0.380.000Video-conference quality
Video VHS1.00 1,000 1.000.001VHS (e.g. Video tape)
Video DVD5.00 5,000 5.000.005DVD
Video HDTV15.00 15,000 15.000.015HDTV

Note: Cinema quality video is in excess of DVD but possibly little better than modern HDTV. This is one reason why the film industry is so hot on DVD duplication, whereas they didn't care so much about videos, due to the much lower quality

Broadband/ADSL 4MB Cable3.00 2,000 2.000.002Modern internet

Note: with internet bandwidth, approx. 50% only is available for upload/download. Also the quoted speed will rarely be reached, expect 50-80% optimum dependent on provider, time of day, and how close (and friendly!) to BT your provider is
